Nations League preview

Fatigue has plagued all of the teams in this post-season run of Nations League fixtures and perhaps no team has looked more laboured than France.

The defending champions of the tournament were beaten 2-1 by Denmark in the first match before a pair of 1-1 draws with Croatia and Austria respectively means they are in danger of being relegated if they don’t take all three points from this return fixture against Luka Modric and co.

Didier Deschamps has had such troubles before, his side drew five games in a row last summer and questions about his coaching have persisted given the talent at his disposal.

As a result of the fatigue in his squad, Deschamps could hand another start to Christopher Nkunku who has featured from the bench twice either side of his start in the reverse fixture.

The RB Leipzig forward is yet to find the net for his nation in five caps but rates as a solid chance here given he will be fresher than some of his rivals for attacking spots.

Nkunku scored 35 goals in all competitions this season and could break his international duck against Croatia.

In the same Nations League group, Austria travel to Denmark with the two sides surprising leaders in the section.

The Danes beat France and Austria before running out of steam somewhat against Croatia last time out, losing 1-0.

In contrast, Austria picked up a big result of their own as they almost took all three points from their recent matchup with Les Bleus, only an 83rd-minute Kylian Mbappe equaliser saving the blushes of the French.

Ralf Rangnick seems to have quickly instilled his style of play on Das Team and four points from their first three games is a good return in a difficult group.

Denmark’s reputation as one of the form teams in international football was punctured slightly by Croatia and the away team could take advantage.

Both teams have suffered injuries so heavy rotation is not out of the question in this clash.

Austria have played their part in a number of entertaining affairs recently, six of their last seven games have seen both teams score and the same is fancied in Copenhagen.

Denmark have been strong recently but if Austria can replicate their performance against France they should find the scoresheet as well.

All in all, tired legs on both sides may produce mistakes and the players will be glad of the rest after this game.
