Luxembourg vs Northern Ireland predictions

If you plan your Nations League campaign with an eye on leaving yourselves needing a point from your final game in Luxembourg to seal automatic promotion, then you've planned pretty well.

That's Northern Ireland's task, as avoiding defeat will secure top spot in Nations League League C Group 3, with Bulgaria two points behind but with a weaker head-to-head record going into their home match against Belarus, who lost 2-0 in Belfast on Friday.

There was a time when Luxembourg were on the up, drawing away in France in 2017 and beating Ireland in 2021.

However, Les Lions Rouges' progress has stalled and they sit bottom of the pool with only draws against Belarus to show for their efforts and have already been condemned to finish bottom so are bound for the relegation playoffs or worse.

It all looks so simple for Michael O'Neill's men, but things rarely turn out that way, and while they have won their three home games, including a 2-0 success in the reverse fixture, they are far less reliable away from Windsor Park.

A 1-0 defeat in Bulgaria and a 0-0 with Belarus on neutral ground in Hungary have been their road results in this competition.

Although they beat Scotland at Hampden Park this year, their only two other away victories in their last 16 were against San Marino in March 2023 and, conveniently, Luxembourg, 12 months before.

Friday's win over Belarus was the latest positive sign to come for O'Neill's young team. It was also their fourth clean sheet in five matches in this group and they can complete the job with another victory.
