Ireland vs Finland predictions
One win from three games means Ireland are up against it in their bid to make it out of their Nations League section and reach the playoffs.
The Bhoys in Green sit third and are six points behind England, meaning they must win both of their remaining games and rely on their rivals losing each of theirs.
The second part of that checklist seems unlikely, but they can at least make progress towards the first in Dublin, thanks to a favourable fixture against the group’s basement boys, Finland.
The Finns have endured a miserable Nations League campaign, losing all four of their matches, conceding ten goals and scoring just two.
They were beaten 2-1 by Ireland in Helsinki last month and look set to suffer a similar result at the Aviva Stadium.
While Ireland have yet to earn a point at home – or even score a goal – in the Nations League, they beat a solid Hungary side 2-1 in their previous home match, while they also held Belgium to a 0-0 draw in Dublin back in March.
Finland, in contrast, are winless on their travels in 2024, losing four times and shipping 15 goals in those five games.
The Bhoys in Green should edge this clash which is unlikely to be full of fireworks.
The two teams have scored a combined four goals in the Nations League this term, with three of those coming in the sides’ meeting last month.
None of Ireland’s last ten matches have featured more than three goals, so taking under 3.5 alongside a home win looks the best route to profit.
At a bigger price, Sammie Szmodics is worth a look in the first goalscorer market as no player in the Ireland squad is averaging more shots per game than his 1.3 in the Nations League.
The midfielder has scored two goals in his last three appearances for Ipswich and both of those were the opener, so he appeals as a pick to get the ball rolling in Dublin.
Key stat
Finland have lost all four of their 2024-25 Nations League games.
