Ireland vs England predictions

England are hoping for a fresh start under interim manager Lee Carsley but they face a tricky test away to Ireland in their Nations League opener and might have to accept a draw, which has been the outcome in six of the last seven contests between the teams.

Both nations are looking forward to new beginnings under new coaching set-ups.

Carsley wants a positive start as he aims to strengthen claims to land the job on a more permanent basis, while Ireland face their first assignment under Icelandic head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, who was a joint-manager of his native country when they famously defeated England 2-1 in the round of 16 at Euro 2016.

Hallgrimsson would love to start his Ireland tenure with another high-profile victory, although he has a bit to prove after a disappointing 21-month spell as the head coach of Jamaica.

The 57-year-old's time with the Reggae Boyz came to an end this summer after he presided over losses to Mexico (0-1), Ecuador (1-3) and Venezuela (0-3) at the Copa America.

He will be hoping for a more positive experience with Ireland as he builds towards an attempt to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but there are clearly issues to address with a side which has won just twice in their last ten matches.

Hallgrimsson has already made some big decisions by leaving experienced defenders Shane Duffy and Enda Stevens out of his first squad.

Brighton forward Evan Ferguson has been selected despite an injury-hit period which has seen him absent for his club since the end of March. But the 19-year-old may lack the necessary fitness to start and might have to settle for a substitute's role behind either Adam Idah or Troy Parrott.

The biggest threat to English defenders could come from Ipswich new boy Sammie Szmodics, who got off the mark for the Tractor Boys with the opening goal in their 4-1 loss at Manchester City.

Ireland are sure to be competitive in midfield and they may have some success in drawing England into a tight, messy encounter with few passages of free-flowing football.

England are aiming to be more attack-minded and expansive under Lee Carsley, who has indicated that he has no problem with deploying Trent Alexander-Arnold in the right-back position.

But Carsley's intention to immediately change the playing style is complicated by several injury absentees, including influential trio Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and a lack of time to work with the group.

As the former England Under-21s head coach, Carsley should already have a good relationship with many of the players.

However, it could take a few games to see the true identity of Carsley's team and he may have to settle for a draw against the Boys in Green, who have not lost a competitive game to England since 1980.
