Greece vs Ireland predictions

Greece made history on Thursday by recording their first victory over England and they should follow it up with a home success against Ireland in Piraeus.

Greece produced an inspired performance on an emotional evening at Wembley after the death of Panathinaikos defender George Baldock.

Vangelis Pavlidis replaced the injured Fotis Ioannidis and excelled in attack, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory. The winner came in stoppage time after Jude Bellingham looked to have rescued an undeserved point for the disjointed hosts, who were outmanoeuvred throughout.

Ivan Jovanovic's side had three other strikes disallowed, while an Anastasios Bakasetas effort was heroically cleared off the line by Levi Colwill.

It left Greece three points clear of England at the top of Nations League Group B2, but they weren't the only 2-1 winners on Thursday, as Ireland triumphed by the same scoreline as they came from behind to beat Finland in Helsinki.

The result signalled Heimir Hallgrimsson's first win in charge and the Icelandic coach will have been encouraged by the spirit his side showed to recover from a Nathan Collins error as second-half efforts from Liam Scales and Robbie Brady secured victory.

Winning in Helsinki will have boosted Irish confidence but that optimism might be tempered by their recent record against the Greeks.

The teams met twice in qualifying for Euro 2024, with Greece winning 2-1 at home and 2-0 away, and they were reacquainted last month in Dublin in another 2-0 victory for the Greeks.

Only Spain and the Netherlands have beaten Greece at home since June 2019, and new coach Jovanovic looks to have every chance of collecting a fourth win from as many games in charge.

Key stat

The teams have met three times since June 2023, with Greece winning on each occasion
