England vs Ireland predictions

Lee Carsley ends his spell as England interim manager as it started with a game against Ireland - the nation he represented as a player. His Three Lions side can grind out a victory, just as they did at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in September, to secure their return to the top tier of the Nations League.

England’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Greece in Athens on Thursday has seen them regain control of Nations League Group B2, avenging their shock 2-1 loss to the Greeks at Wembley, and means a win over third-placed Ireland will be enough to see them promoted as section winners.

Handing over to Thomas Tuchel having achieved a return to League A is all that matters to Carsley and his players, so the performance could be cagey and cautious rather than flashy and flamboyant.

England had to deal with a raft of high-profile withdrawals for this international week but Carsley’s young replacements have grasped the opportunity with both hands and they should be keen to strengthen that impression against the Boys in Green.

However, despite the victory in Greece, England managed only five shots on target while it took the Three Lions 57 minutes to break through against Finland in their only home success of this season’s competition.

Carsley’s side were quicker off the mark against Ireland in Dublin, with both goals in that 2-0 success coming inside 26 minutes, but there are reasons to think they may have to be more patient in this must-win encounter.

Skipper Harry Kane is set to return to lead the line, having been introduced from the bench in Athens on Thursday, but England very rarely release the shackles and only one of their last 14 internationals has featured over 3.5 goals.

What Ireland lack in quality they make up for in fight and desire and manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is likely to set up his side to frustrate the Three Lions.

The Boys in Green are already assured of third place after their 1-0 victory over Finland on Thursday and they may ultimately lack the firepower to live with England, having failed to score in six of their last nine internationals.

Ireland may be content to perform a damage-limitation exercise at Wembley and, with eight of their last 11 internationals featuring two or fewer goals, Carsley’s side may have to dig deep to break them down.

The Three Lions remain defensively strong regardless of their personnel, keeping three clean sheets in five Nations League outings, so another shutout should be within their reach and that lends itself to a low-scoring home win.

Key stat

Ireland have lost four of their last six away games to nil.
