England vs Finland predictions

England's new era under Lee Carsley began with a slick 2-0 success away to Ireland and the Three Lions can maintain the positive vibe with a high-scoring victory over Finland at Wembley.

Carsley admitted to having doubts about whether he is the right man for the job but the England players spoke volumes for him in Dublin, delivering a superb first-half display.

The Three Lions faced highly motivated opponents in a noisy, largely hostile stadium but they soon settled down to playing their football and showed moments of class with a couple of superb goals.

All the talk before the game had been of the attacking brand of football favoured by the new interim head coach. But saying and doing are two very different things and it soon became clear that England's players were fully in tune with their new man at the helm.

England played with natural width on both sides – a tactic rarely seen at Euro 2024 – and had players in their favoured positions.

Jack Grealish returned from the cold with a goalscoring performance in an attacking midfield berth and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Anthony Gordon moved on from frustrating Euro 2024 experiences by playing key roles in the victory.

Critics might point out that England were less vibrant after the break. But Carsley and his players will aim to deliver a more complete performance against Finland so that they can fully celebrate an occasion which is expected to feature a 100th cap for captain Harry Kane.

Finland face a confident and motivated England side and may have a real struggle in keeping the scoreline respectable.

Markku Kanerva's outfit are the lowest-ranked team in the section and got off to a poor start with a 3-0 loss to away to Greece.

The weekend reverse leaves them at the foot of the table and was compounded by a leg injury to experienced midfielder Rasmus Schuller, who failed to finish the game.

Finland were also hampered by a pre-match injury to Sparta Prague midfielder Kaan Kairinen and their mounting injury list is a major concern as they prepare for their toughest test of the group.

The Finns have struggled on their travels this year, losing three of four matches and conceding 13 goals.

They were beaten 4-1 by Wales in their last competitive away game and another heavy loss looks probable against England, who are attractively priced to register a 4-0 success.
