Match preview

Scotland got the better of Armenia at Hampden Park last week but they face a different set of circumstances in Yerevan, where temperatures are expected to reach 28 degrees and there are thunderstorms forecast.

The conditions played a major role in Ireland’s 1-0 defeat there and the Tartan Army are licking their wounds after a 3-0 defeat to the Boys in Green in Dublin on Saturday.

Armenia were beaten by the same scoreline by Ukraine in Poland but they should be able to improve on their last two performances back in more familiar surroundings, where they have performed well of late.

Steve Clarke faced plenty of criticism after the defeat to Ireland and he is likely to ring the changes in a tired looking squad, with Sunderland striker Ross Stewart a potential beneficiary.

Armenia struggled with Scotland’s aerial presence throughout the first game - both goals they conceded were headers - and they may have a tough time trying to contain the physical Stewart.

The 25-year-old scored seven headed goals in League One this season and could be the man to take advantage of the home side’s weakness in such situations to get his first goal for his nation. It's unlikely to be a high-scoring affair though, with the conditions likely to drain both sides.

Key stat

Both Scotland's goals in the reverse fixture were headers
