Manchester United are in a mess but they may not even have sunk to their lowest point despite sacking Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils may be more vulnerable than long odds-on quotes for a top-six finish suggest.

United are sixth after 17 matches. They have a zero goal difference which is the same as Leicester in 12th and their defensive record of 29 goals conceded is worse than 19th-placed Huddersfield's. Only Fulham have kept fewer clean sheets that United's tally of two.

The club issued a statement saying a caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the season before conducting a "thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager" which leaves the Red Devils in a state of flux until the permanent replacement is named.
