Thomas Tuchel is expected to be the next permanent manager of England after reports emerged that he has agreed to become Gareth Southgate’s successor.

The German coach, who has won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and championships in France and Germany, has been available since leaving Bayern Munich in May.

Tuchel was 20-1 for the job behind initial 11-4 favourite Graham Potter after Southgate stepped down following the 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final, but he had drifted to as big as 50-1 at the start of this month.

He was no bigger than 2-1 the day after England lost to Greece under interim coach Lee Carsley and has become a popular pick in the last few days.

Tuchel is a shrewd tactician, who worked with England captain Harry Kane at Bayern, and his skillset should appeal to the FA. M

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola had been second favourite at 4-1 with bet365 before betting closed, while former Under-21 coach Carsley had drifted to 14-1 having been odds-on before his experimental line-up flopped against Greece in the Nations League.

England are 4-9 to win Nations League Group B2, with group leaders Greece 7-4, while the Three Lions are 7-1 to win the 2026 World Cup behind only Brazil, France and Spain in the betting.
