Northern Ireland vs Switzerland predictions

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has plenty of time to find his best side and system before the Green and White Army embark on their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Northern Ireland are in a ten-month break from competitive action due to their stellar Nations League campaign, which saw them pip Bulgaria to top spot in Group C3, and being drawn in a four-team section for World Cup qualifying.

They therefore have three friendlies to play before facing Luxembourg in their opening qualifier, beginning with a visit from Switzerland on Friday.

Expectations in the crowd at Windsor Park will be high given the hosts have won their last five home matches to nil, but the Swiss could prove too strong.

Murat Yakin’s side endured a miserable 2024-25 Nations League, winning none of their six matches and being relegated to Nations League B, but they had looked progressive prior to that.

Switzerland have lost just 12 of their 45 matches since Yakin’s appointment and they caught the eye at Euro 2024, drawing with Germany to progress into the last 16 where they beat defending champions Italy 2-0.

They were arguably the better side over 120 minutes of their quarter-final against England before eventually losing on penalties and a performance anywhere near that level should see them brush aside Northern Ireland with ease.

Yakin will be without a few key men in Belfast, including Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Zeki Amdouni, but dangerous forward Breel Embolo is available to lead the line and it is not as if the hosts are at full strength themselves.

Key defenders Daniel Ballard and Conor Bradley are injured and their absence could be felt against a Swiss side who scored twice against Spain in their last outing.

Switzerland need to rebuild confidence ahead of their own 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and they should have enough to secure a win in Belfast, although goals are unlikely to flow freely given none of the pair’s eight previous meetings have featured more than three.
