Sunday's European football predictions

An unbeaten start to the season has seen Roberto De Zerbi get off to a flyer with Marseille and his new team should have no issues continuing their excellent form against Lyon, who seem to have regressed after a strong finish last term.

Pierre Sage's men signed off with eight wins from ten games and many predicted big things from them this season.

That hasn't come to fruition yet, however, as Lyon have picked up only four points from their first 12 available and an expected goals-against figure of 8.25 – the fifth-worst in Ligue 1 after four games – is a real worry.

Marseille have netted 12 goals while picking up ten points and their free-scoring nature could see them overpower their hosts.

Atletico Madrid's excellent continued on Thursday as they beat RB Leipzig 2-1 in the Champions League and they should maintain their unbeaten record in La Liga with a win over Rayo Vallecano after routing them 7-0 in this fixture last term.

All three of Atleti's league wins this season have come to nil. The first was a 3-0 win over Champions League outfit Girona while Athletic Bilbao had gone 16 home matches without a loss before their 1-0 defeat to Atletico.

Diego Simeone's side are renowned for their defensive stability but Atleti have flexed their attacking muscle this term, putting three past Girona and Valencia, and they could once again rack up the goals against Vallecano, who could also net given both teams have scored in four of their five games this season.

It could also pay to back Conor Gallagher to score for Atleti after netting his maiden goal for his new club against Valencia.

Gallagher was rested in the week but had started the last two league games and should regain his spot. Simeone's 5-3-2 system gives the English midfielder scope to roam forward and his non-penalty expected goals per shot is up to 0.38 from 0.09 last term.

That suggests he is getting better chances with Atleti and 7-1 looks a big price for the former Chelsea man to find the net against Vallecano.
