Tottenham vs Qarabag predictions

European football was absent from Tottenham's schedule last season but they can prove too slick for their Azerbaijan's Qarabag on their return to the continental stage in their first Europa League outing.

Spurs are 9-2 favourites with most firms to win the competition and, even accounting for wholesale changes, Thursday's match looks the perfect starting point against a Qarabag side who suffered a 5-0 aggregate defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the final round of Champions League qualifying.

Zagreb have since been humbled 9-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, suggesting that the gulf in class between Premier League Tottenham and their Azeri visitors could be stark.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has a wealth of attacking options at his disposal and Lilywhites supporters are rarely starved of entertainment in the capital.

Tottenham registered 23 shots, ten of which were on target, and posted an expected-goals figure of 3.68 in their 3-1 home win over Brentford on Saturday.

Indeed, only leaders Manchester City have taken more shots in this season's Premier League than Tottenham’s tally of 86 in five outings, so Qarabag goalkeeper Mateusz Kochalski could be in for an extremely busy evening.

That said, Spurs rarely make things easy for themselves and they have kept only one clean sheet in six games this season, which includes a 1-1 draw at Leicester and a late 2-1 win in the EFL Cup at Championship side Coventry last week.

Tottenham have kept only one two shutouts in their last 17 outings so Qarabag will believe they can pose problems for a home defence that may be much-changed from their weekend win, especially with Cristian Romero suspended.

The visitors showed their goalscoring capabilities in last season’s Europa League as they dumped out Braga 6-5 on aggregate in the playoff round before losing 5-4 over two legs to runners-up Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16.

Both teams scored in seven of Qarabag’s final eight Europa League matches last season, which includes three of their four meetings with Bundesliga champions Leverkusen, so this could be a Thursday treat.

Key stat

Qarabag’s six European games this season have produced 24 goals.

Richarlison and Wilson Odobert remain sidelined for Tottenham, who look likely to ring the changes. Cristian Romero is suspended due to being sent off in Spurs' last European fixture two seasons ago.
