Rangers vs Union St-Gilloise predictions

The new league phase introduced into European competitions by Uefa this season was supposed to increase excitement and jeopardy as it reached its conclusion.

Both Rangers and Belgian side Union St-Gillioise are assured of a place in the Europa League knockout round ahead of their matchday-eight meeting at Ibrox, so there shouldn't be too much jeopardy in Glasgow, but it means the pair can play with freedom and a top-eight finish, and a fast-track to the last 16, is not out of the question for either.

Rangers are in a better position in that endeavour. They have a superior goal difference to USG which  could open the door to the Light Blues if one of the sides occupying the final four top-eight positions – Lyon, Tottenham, Anderlecht or FCSB – were to lose.

However, there are four clubs at least one point closer to the top eight than Philippe Clement’s men so the playoff round is still their likeliest destination.

Rangers were on course to pick up a valuable point against Manchester United a week ago when Cyriel Dessers scored a late equaliser at Old Trafford, but they were left crestfallen by Bruno Fernandes's injury-time winner.

Nonetheless, it was a positive performance from the Light Blues, whose youngsters were excellent.

A spate of injuries means Clement may again have to call on his young stars against a Union Saint-Gilloise side who are finishing the league phase with a rattle.

The Belgian visitors picked up only two points from the first four European fixtures but three wins on the spin have propelled them up the standings.

Sebastien Pocognoli’s men have netted ten times in their last four away matches and they won't be shy in coming forward.

With both sides able to play with freedom, there is every chance that the goals could flow at Ibrox.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in five of Rangers' last six Europa League games.
