Porto vs Manchester United predictions

Erik ten Hag is running out of excuses after Manchester United's disappointing start to the season but his players have delivered for him on some big occasions and they can find a way of beating Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

Pressure on Ten Hag ratcheted up after Sunday's 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham which left the Red Devils 13th in the Premier League standings.

United were outplayed in the first half against Spurs and could have lost by a wider margin.

But there was a response in the second half, despite them being down to ten men, and they will be looking to show the same spirit in Portugal.

United have delivered some of their better performances on the road and were unlucky to draw 0-0 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

They lacked a cutting edge on that occasion but are in a better position to penetrate Porto because Rasmus Hojlund is closer to full fitness.

The Dane is pushing for his first start of the season and may have some joy against a Porto side who defended poorly in a 3-2 loss away to Bodo-Glimt on Europa League matchday one.

Porto remain second in the Portuguese top flight after last Sunday's 4-0 success at home to Arouca but they have a sketchy recent record in this competition, winning only one of their last seven games, and need a big improvement on last Wednesday's display in Norway when they were beaten despite playing most of the second half against ten men.

Head coach Vitor Bruno will be seeking a positive response and a victory on home soil but his team may come up short against a United side anxious to atone for their shambolic Sunday.
