Manchester United vs Twente predictions

Erik ten Hag was in bullish mood after Manchester United's 0-0 Premier League draw at Crystal Palace last week, declaring that his side "ate them alive" in the first half at Selhurst Park.

However, United remain an unappetising prospect for punters as they kick off their Europa League campaign at home to Twente.

They have kept three straight clean sheets since a chastening 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, but it will take more than a 3-0 league victory at struggling Southampton and a 7-0 EFL Cup rout of third-tier Barnsley to win over the doubters.

Injuries were a factor in United's lowly eighth-placed Premier League finish last season, but Ten Hag cannot complain about a lack of squad depth this term.

While he is still missing a handful of defensive options, his outfield substitutes for the Palace game – Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans – had 384 international caps between them.

The challenge for the United boss is working out his strongest 11. The Red Devils host Tottenham, the only club above them in the Europa League betting, in a significant league fixture this weekend so it will be interesting to see how they line up against Twente.

The visitors arrive in good spirits after a 5-0 rout of Almere City in the Eredivisie on Saturday, although they have won only one of their previous 13 European meetings with English clubs.

In a tricky betting heat, in-form Twente attacking midfielder Sem Steijn is an appealing each-way selection to score first.

The 22-year-old has scored braces in his last two appearances, taking his tally for the season to six goals, including two penalties, in six league games.

Steijn averages 3.8 shots per match in the Eredivisie and came off the bench to score the final goal in last month's 3-3 draw with RB Salzburg in Champions League qualifying.
