2024-25 Conference League predictions

The extension of the Champions League and the Europa League has thinned out the competition in the Conference League and all eyes will be on Chelsea, who are no bigger than 7-4 to become the first club to win every major European trophy.

The fact that Enzo Maresca has opted to leave his talisman Cole Palmer out of his Europa Conference League squad shows that their main focus is elsewhere, although it would still come as no surprise were they to blow this field apart given their strength in depth.

La Liga outfit Real Betis and Serie A’s Fiorentina, who have finished runner-up in the Conference League in the last two seasons, are the only other pair available at a single-figure price and it is 16-1 bar the big three.

They look like the two chief dangers to Chelsea’s supremacy and Fiorentina would be preferred to Real Betis given they have shown clear intent in this competition in recent seasons.

The Viola played second fiddle to West Ham in 2022–23 and were runners-up again last season to Olympiakos, who had denied Aston Villa in the semi-final. But, Chelsea aside, there are fewer challengers in their bid to make it third time lucky.

Manager Vincenzo Italiano has since left for Bologna and been replaced by Monza’s Raffaele Palladino, but they’ve lost only one of their six Serie A games this season and still have a pretty strong squad.

Of those further down the betting, Copenhagen may be of interest given they made the round of 16 in last season’s Champions League, qualifying for the knockout stage ahead of Galatasaray and Manchester United in a group also featuring Bayern.

The Danish side were comfortably beaten 6-2 by Manchester City in the knockout phase but they scored home and away and, while some players have departed, they do excel in finding fresh talent.

In the Conference League, each side will face six different teams (three home games, three away), with the the top eight qualifying automatically for the knockout stage.

There are three other British teams in the field in Hearts, Welsh side The New Saints and Northern Irish team Larne, plus League of Ireland outfit Shamrock Rovers. However, it is difficult to see how any of those four being up to the challenge.
