Euro 2022 news: England favourites for first major title

England are favourites to win their first major tournament after their comeback win over Spain set up a semi-final against Sweden on Tuesday.

The Spaniards began the tournament as the only team ahead of the Lionesses in the betting and after seeing off La Roja 2-1 thanks to an extra-time winner from Georgia Stanway, Sarina Wiegman’s side are a best-priced 7-4 to win Euro 2022.

After breezing through their group without conceding, the hosts faced their first true test in Brighton and were just six minutes away from departing the tournament after Esther Gonzalez’s 54th-minute goal.

However substitute Ella Toone hit an equaliser in the 84th minute to send the match to extra-time before Stanway’s thunderbolt strike secured the Lionesses’ passage to the final four.

Semi-final opponents Sweden are a best-priced 6-1 to win the tournament and got the better of England 2-1 in their last meeting, the 2019 World Cup third-place playoff.

In the other semi-final, outright 5-2 chances Germany take on 3-1 shots France in what looks set to be a competitive encounter.

Les Bleues came through a tough last-eight game against the Netherlands that finished goalless after 90 minutes before Eve Perisset scored an extra time penalty to break the French curse of quarter-final defeats.

Germany in contrast managed a more comfortable 2-0 victory over Austria to secure this tie against Corinne Diacre’s team.

The Golden Boot race is also still on with Germany's Alexandra Popp looking to bridge the gap of a single goal to England’s Beth Mead, who leads the way with five strikes. Mead is long odds-on to secure the top goalscorer honours, with Popp a 5-1 chance.
