England slashed for Euro 2020 after heroics in Spain

England narrowly missed out on a shot at world domination in the summer but they are heading in the right direction to conquer Europe following Monday night’s impressive 3-2 win in Spain.

That’s the view of bookmakers and punters alike with the layers taking a knife to England’s odds of winning first the Nations League and then Euro 2020.

Gareth Southgate’s World Cup semi-finalists were given a massive thumbs-up over their excellent triumph in Seville, secured by a brace from Raheem Sterling either side of a Marcus Rashford tap-in, which has revived hopes of winning their Nations League group.

They had been 7-1 to pip Spain for that honour before Monday night – now they are just 15-8.

England’s unlikely success – they were 5-1 to inflict a first a competitive home defeat in 15 years on Spain – means they now have a shot at topping Group Four and qualifying for the summer finals, although they would need Luis Enrique’s men to do them a favour and fail to win in Croatia on November 15. If that happens, Southgate’s starlets would clinch the section with a win over the Croats three days later.

Looking further forward, the Three Lions have been cut from 10-1 to 8-1 for the European Championship in two years.

After enduring years of mediocrity and false dawns, England fans are understandably excited about the future under Southgate and are putting their money where their hearts are.

Southgate has craved a win against one of the big boys, something absent from his reign so far, and the normally reserved England chief was in no doubt about the significance of the result, especially as he masterminded it with a side boasting an average age of just 23.

“The players have to take tremendous belief from that,” he said. “That’s one more question answered. The players continue to take steps forward.”
