Shrewsbury vs Exeter predictions

Shrewsbury have been entrenched in the League One relegation zone for over a month but they have improved in recent weeks and can climb out of the bottom four by defeating seventh-placed Exeter at the Croud Meadow.

Struggles for third-tier survival have become familiar fare for Shrewsbury, who have finished in the bottom eight in three of the last four campaigns.

However, the Shrews are competing in League One for the tenth successive campaign and, after a poor start to the season, they seem to be getting their act together.

Paul Hurst's side have taken four points from their last two games by achieving a coupon-busting 2-2 draw at in-from Bolton and a superb 5-3 success away to fellow strugglers Crawley.

Experienced striker John Marquis was restored to the starting eleven for the last two matches and made his presence felt at Crawley with a couple of second-half goals.

Marquis is a proven striker in the lower divisions, amassing double-figure league tallies in four of the last eight campaigns, but his Shrews' career has got off to a slow start with no goals scored in the first nine appearances.

But Marquis showed his worth at the weekend and he could have a key role to play in lifting the team away from the danger zone.

While Shrewsbury are focused on avoiding the drop, Exeter have ambitions to join the promotion race.

The Grecians finished 13th last season after taking 20 points from their last nine games, and they have largely impressed this term by winning five of nine league fixtures.

Solid defending has been a key factor for Gary Caldwell's outfit, who have taken ten points from the last four matches, keeping clean sheets in all of them.

But standards dropped last time out when they scraped a hard-fought 1-0 success at home to struggling Cambridge.

Exeter lost the shot count 12 to 11 against the division's basement boys and success was achieved with the help of some errant finishing from their opponents.

Caldwell will be looking for a much-improved performance in Shropshire, but his charges are up against an improving team and may be edged aside in a tight encounter.
