Preston vs Sunderland predictions

Sunderland saw their promotion hopes dented by Saturday's 0-0 draw at QPR and a bigger setback could be on the cards when they take on Preston in Lancashire.

Floodlit matches seem to suit Preston, who are on a sequence of 21 Championship midweek home games without tasting defeat. And the fifth-bottom Lilywhites look the likelier winners against Sunderland, who have triumphed just once on their last seven visits to Deepdale.

Preston approach the game with the aim of bouncing back from Saturday's 3-1 loss at home to Bristol City.

North End's weekend reverse ended a run of five league games without a defeat and it was influenced by a controversial moment because Bristol City's sixth-minute deadlock breaker was allowed to stand despite goalscorer Yu Hirakawa clearly handling the ball before tapping it into an empty net.

Preston played some decent football after the early setback and lost out despite winning the shot count 14 to five.

However, they have had to wait only four days for the next fixture and it comes at a tricky time for their opponents, who are without a host of injured players, including first-choice keeper Anthony Patterson and suspended midfielder Jobe Bellingham, who received a  red card during Saturday's stalemate at QPR.

Bellingham's rash challenge on Zan Celar was a sign of Sunderland's frustration as they struggled to get to grips with energetic and determined opponents.

QPR lacked the finesse to find winning goal but their physical performance may have softened up the Black Cats and could be key to helping Preston achieve their fourth league win of the campaign.
