Portsmouth vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions

Sheffield Wednesday have had a mixed start to the season but they can climb up the congested Championship table by beating injury-ravaged basement boys Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Ambitious Owls manager Danny Rohl wants swift progress from his side and was frustrated after his team's 0-0 draw at home to Swansea on Tuesday.

Rohl wants more of a cutting edge but the stalemate put his side on 12 points, which is nine more than the club's tally at the same stage of last season.

It might take a few more transfer windows to transform Wednesday into promotion contenders but they are already a competitive, well organised side while opponents Pompey face a scrap for survival.

Portsmouth were promoted as League One champions but have struggled to handle the step up and had a sobering experience on Tuesday when losing 2-0 at Cardiff.

Pompey boss John Mousinho pulled no punches with his post-match assessment but has few options to switch things around.

Six players missed the trip to Wales and three more – Jonathan Schmid, Jordan Williams and Paddy Lane - picked up injuries in the opening half of a contest largely dominated by the home side.

Mousinho will be looking for character from his players and noise from the stands to boost hopes of a positive result.

However, his team are likely to lack energy, quality and confidence and they may struggle to cope with the functional visitors, who look a solid wager in the draw-no-bet market.
