Portsmouth vs Coventry predictions

Relegation-threatened Portsmouth were hammered 4-0 at Derby last Friday but they have been showing a more competitive edge at Fratton Park and can stand up to Coventry in their final home match of 2024.

Consolidating in the Championship was always going to be a challenge for Portsmouth, who are playing in the second tier for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign. But they went to Derby on a four-game unbeaten run which included home victories over Preston and Bristol City, and they will look at the Coventry clash as another decent opportunity to add to their tally.

Portsmouth are a point inside the relegation zone and only seven points worse off than Coventry, who have played two games more.

It is a tight division and, while Coventry's ambition is to push towards the playoffs, they know that a drop in performance could see them battling the drop.

The Sky Blues have made a reasonable start under Frank Lampard, taking seven points from four games, although they were beaten 2-0 at West Brom on their last road trip and had to come from behind in last Saturday's 2-1 triumph at home to basement boys Hull.

However, Lampard appears to have lifted the squad and his influence has been especially positive for attacker Ephron Mason-Clark, who has gone from being a regular substitute to scoring three goals in four matches.

Coventry can probably look forward to a more positive 2025 but they are far from the finished article and are worth opposing in this clash.
