Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United predictions

Mid-table Middlesbrough have felt short-changed on several occasions this season but they can give their Championship promotion hopes a major boost by defeating highflying Sheffield United at the Riverside.

If shot statistics and expected goals are definitions of a team's ability and potential then Middlesbrough should have plenty to look forward to.

Following last weekend's Championship fixtures, Michael Carrick's side were top of both metrics with a total of 178 shots and an xG of 18.43.

However, they have experienced numerous hard-luck stories, including on Saturday when they lost 2-0 at home to Bristol City despite a shot-count advantage of 20 to nine.

Boro's finishing has room for improvement, but their general dominance of matches should yield better returns as the campaign continues.

And the Teessiders have a good opportunity against the Blades, who relinquished their unbeaten status with Friday's 2-0 loss at Leeds.

Sheffield United have been a front-foot side for much of the season but they attempted a containment strategy at Elland Road and could have no complaints with the outcome after failing to muster a shot on target.

Blades boss Chris Wilder may ask his team to play more positively against Boro but he has a big gap to fill in midfield with Vinicius Souza serving a one-match suspension.

The powerful Brazilian has played a key role in the Yorkshire side's strong start to the season and his absence may hurt them against Boro, who look a solid wager to secure an overdue fifth league win of the campaign.
