Luton vs Derby predictions

Derby should be delighted with their exploits in 2024.

Adjusting from League One to Championship football can be tricky, but the Rams have got stuck into the challenge with gusto and are 14th in the second-tier standings with 24 points from 21 games.

There is no room for complacency, but Derby will travel to Luton on Friday in high spirits after a 4-0 home thumping of Portsmouth a week ago, which was their biggest win of the campaign.

The Rams' performance against Pompey was intense, clinical and organised and will have delighted their boss manager Paul Warne, whose main aim this season is to consolidate the club's Championship status.

An injury to outstanding central defender Eiran Cashin will have taken the shine off last week's win a little, but his replacement, Liverpool loanee Nat Phillips, moved seamlessly into the Rams' back four and played his part in a strong team performance.

Derby have been less productive on their travels, but they drew 0-0 at Burnley on their last road trip and have the tools to cope with Luton, who are in danger of being dragged into a relegation scrap for a second successive season.

The 19th-placed Hatters are five points above the drop zone and pressure is mounting on manager Rob Edwards, who had hoped to get them challenging for a return to the Premier League.

They have taken 18 of their 22 points on home soil, where their direct style has often caused problems for opponents. However, Luton's physical approach is unlikely to concern a robust Derby outfit who can more than hold their own.

Key stat

Luton have gone five matches without a clean sheet.
