Hull vs Sunderland predictions

Sunderland kicked off the weekend at the top of the Championship table and the Black Cats can continue where they left off before the international break with a statement victory at Hull.

Regis Le Bris’s first taste of management in England could hardly have started any better as Sunderland have taken 19 points from their opening nine league games.

That is despite having already encountered fixtures with title favourites Leeds as well as Burnley and Middlesbrough, two other teams expected to make their presence felt in the promotion race.

A freak mistake from Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier gifted Sunderland a point in a 2-2 draw in their final outing before the two-week hiatus, but they should find the challenge of Hull considerably easier.

The Tigers have recovered well from a sluggish start, winning three of their last four games, although those victories have come against three bottom-half teams.

Against the Championship’s elite, however, Hull have been found out and that was evident in their final match before the layoff as they were brushed aside 4-0 at Norwich.

The hosts have also failed to score in defeats to Sheffield United and Leeds and they may be found wanting against a slick Sunderland side who have been playing some excellent football under Le Bris.

The Frenchman’s style of play hinges on his midfield creating space and building an attack rather than a gung-ho approach and it is bringing the best out of Jobe Bellingham and Romaine Mundle, who has effortlessly filled the void left by Jack Clarke’s departure.

The Tigers have won only two of their last 12 home league games and they may be outclassed by Sunderland, who are also proving defensively astute with five clean sheets in nine outings.

Key stat

Sunderland have lost only one of their last 12 meetings with Hull in 90 minutes.
