Wigan advanced to the third round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time success at Cambridge on Saturday, but their main priority is to get involved in the League One promotion race and they can take an important step forward against fifth-placed Huddersfield at the John Smith's Stadium.

Huddersfield are odds-on to register a tenth league win of the campaign, which is understandable bearing in mind they are unbeaten in seven league fixtures.

However, the absentee list has been mounting for the Yorkshire side, who lost wing-back Mickel Miller to a knee injury during last Tuesday's 2-0 victory away to Leyton Orient.

Three days before that Huddersfield were unconvincing 2-1 winners over a Charlton side reduced to ten men by Greg Docherty's 36th-minute red card. And that display will have offered encouragement to Wigan, who have put in some strong performances on their travels.

The Latics have visited three of the top six teams and played well on each occasion.

They were beaten 2-1 at Birmingham, where they conceded the winning goal in injury time, drew 0-0 at Stockport and won 1-0 at Barnsley.

Shaun Maloney's side have dropped more points than they would have liked against some of the smaller clubs, but they have consistently shown that they can compete with the division's best teams.

Wigan's weekend FA Cup triumph at Cambridge was their third win on the trot and there is every chance they can take at least a point against Huddersfield.
