Coventry vs Luton predictions

They were dreaming of the Premier League the last time Coventry and Luton met – now they cross swords looking over their shoulders at League One.

Seventeen months after these clubs faced off at Wembley in the Championship play-off final they clash again at the CBS Arena.

Mark Robins and Rob Edwards were the men who led their sides out at Wembley and they are still in the dugouts for Saturday's renewal.

And just as it was tight in May 2023 – the match ended 1-1 with Luton winning promotion on penalties – it looks likely to be tight this time.

All three of their meetings in 2022-23 ended in draws and since the Championship has turned into the section of stalemates - 31 percent of this season's fixtures have ended all-square - don't be surprised if this one adds to that figure.

Coventry, who come into the match on the back of Tuesday's 1-1 draw at QPR, have played 13 matches this season and only one has been settled by more than one goal.

Luton are two points better off but have had less preparation time having tackled Sunderland at Kenilworth Road on Wednesday night, a sapping affair which they lost 2-1.

The Hatters had twice as many shots as the league leaders – 19-8 – and ten corners, which are a speciality of theirs. No team in tier two has won more corners than Luton.

That makes their chimney pot defenders threats at their abundant set-pieces, among them is Mark McGuinness, incredibly Town's second-most prolific shot taker, who is a handsome 7-2 to have at least one effort on target.

Key stat

Defender Mark McGuinness has had 14 efforts on goal this season – only striker Eli Adebayo has had more for Luton

Coventry vs Luton team news

Coventry
Young keeper Oliver Dovin, at fault for QPR's goal on Tuesday, has been rested before and could be again. Brad Collins stands by. Victor Torp should replace Josh Eccles, who took a knock. Jake Bidwell is still out.

Luton
Reece Burke's groin injury means Daiki Hashioka should stay on the right side of Edwards' back three. Shandon Baptiste is back in training and could make the bench while Marvelous Nakamba may get a recall to freshen up the midfield.

Probable teams

Coventry (3-5-2): Collins; Latibeaudiere, Thomas, Binks; Van Ewijk, Torp, Sheaf, Rudoni, Dasilva; Wright, Simms.
Subs: Kitching, Andrews, Sakamoto, Mason-Clark, Bassette, Tavares, Thomas-Asante.

Luton (3-4-1-2): Kaminski; Hashioka, McGuinness, Holmes; Moses, Krauss, Nakamba, Doughty; Chong; Morris, Adebayo.
