Bristol City vs Cardiff predictions

After taking just one point from the first 21 available, a 1-0 win against Millwall offered some much-needed relief for Championship basement boys Cardiff.

However, any feelgood factor built from that victory could be quickly dashed by Bristol City, who will be eager to end a poor run of their own.

The Robins have won just one of their last six league matches, although they were unlucky not to leave Sheffield Wednesday with three points on Wednesday and should fare better at Ashton Gate, where they have put together an exceptional run.

Liam Manning's men have gone nine Championship matches without a home defeat, winning six times in a sequence which includes a victory over last season's champions Leicester and a draw with FA Cup semi-finalists Coventry.

Cardiff are not in the same bracket as those sides and their away form is something caretaker boss Omer Riza must fix quickly if he is to have any chance of lifting them out of the relegation zone.

The Bluebirds have lost five of their last six away games, drawing the other, and have shipped 19 goals in that run, suggesting three points at a fortress-like Ashton Gate should be beyond them.

Manning has his own issues to fix, though, as the goals have dried up for the Robins.

Bristol City have netted only three goals in their last five games, failing to score in three of those outings, suggesting they are unlikely to completely run away with things in the first Severnside derby of the Championship season.

Just one of the teams' last 12 meetings has gone over 3.5 goals, so backing a low-scoring home win could be the best route to profit.

Key stat

Bristol City are unbeaten in nine home Championship matches, winning six times in that run.
