EFL Trophy predictions

Birmingham's unbeaten start to the League One season came to an end with Saturday's 1-0 loss at Charlton, but the Blues will be eager to go on another run and they can make a start by winning away to Shrewsbury in Tueday's EFL Trophy clash.

Winning promotion is the main aim for Birmingham, who are two points clear in League One having played a game less than second-placed Wrexham.

But Blues manager Chris Davies wants to do well in the cups and his charges have ground to make up in the EFL Trophy after last month's 1-1 draw and subsequent 4-3 penalty shootout loss at home to Walsall.

Davies's side were frustrated by the Saddlers but they should have more success against Shrewsbury, who sit bottom of the group after a 2-1 loss at home to Fulham Under-21s.

Shrewsbury are 22nd in League One and are sure to have one eye on Saturday's key clash away to fellow strugglers Crawley.

Birmingham's scheduled weekend fixture at home to Cambridge has been postponed so they should have full focus on Shrewsbury and can register a comfortable victory.

League Two Fleetwood are another team with a blank weekend coming up and can sign off for their mini-break with an EFL Trophy home win over fourth-tier rivals Barrow.

The competition started on a disappointing note for both teams as Fleetwood lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa Under-21s and Barrow went down 3-2 at home to Bolton.

However, Barrow have Saturday's league match at home to Morecambe to consider and their busier week plays into the hands of Fleetwood, who are on a six-game unbeaten run.
