Wycombe vs Aston Villa predictions

Aston Villa are a big club without a recent history of winning major honours but they can pass their first obstacle in the EFL Cup by defeating League One Wycombe at Adams Park.

The Villans have not lifted a major trophy for more than 28 years but they have made huge strides under Unai Emery, who steered them to fourth place in last season's Premier League.

Qualification for the Champions League was hard-earned and some of its rewards will be seen next Wednesday, when Villa take on Bayern Munich in their first continental top-tier home fixture since 1983.

The contest against Bayern is sandwiched between Premier League matches away to Ipswich and at home to Manchester United, and Emery will almost certainly consider those upcoming fixtures when settling on a starting line-up for this cup tie.

However, he has some talented players waiting for an opportunity including Colombia striker Jhon Duran, who has notched four Premier League goals from off the bench and will be desperate to impress on his first competitive start of the season.

Wycombe are in for a tough game but they are on a six-game unbeaten run which includes a 1-0 success away to Championship side Swansea in the EFL Cup second round.

The Chairboys are ninth in League One and their 12-goal tally is higher than any of the teams outside the top three positions.

However, they have also shipped ten goals and their suspect defence could ruin hopes of springing a major surprise.
