Tottenham vs Manchester City predictions

Tottenham have given Manchester City plenty of scares in recent seasons and they can again catch the Citizens off guard in the EFL Cup the night before Halloween.

City have improved their record against the north Londoners with wins in their last two meetings but they have won just three of their last seven encounters with Spurs going back to August 2021.

Tottenham have undoubtedly been a bit of a bogey team for City and they should sniff an opportunity in the last 16 of the EFL Cup - a competition which the visitors will not be prioritising.

Pep Guardiola insisted earlier this season that his team will not "waste energy" on the EFL Cup and a weakened team is likely to be fielded in the capital.

Youngsters Kaden Braithwaite and Nico O'Reilly are among those who could feature for the visitors and given the potential changes, it would be unwise to read too much into City's five-game winning sequence.

This is a more important game for Tottenham, who will be after a response to Sunday's 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League and the EFL Cup could also represent a good opportunity to end their trophy drought.

Spurs should therefore play a pretty strong side for this game, although it looks like this tie has come too soon for Heung-Min Son who is returning to fitness following a thigh injury, and Wilson Odobert has been ruled out with a long-term injury.

And while Tottenham slipped up at Palace on Sunday, they returned from the international break this month with back-to-back home wins against West Ham and AZ Alkmaar.

City are getting results even without playing their best, so a Tottenham win would be a bold pick and there may be more value in backing the draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, meaning penalties would be required.

It remains to be seen just how strong Ange Postecoglou will go in this game but one youngster who could get a run-out is 17-year-old Mikey Moore.

Moore made his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace on Sunday but a poor team performance meant he did not get much time on the ball.

Last Thursday, however, he looked sharp against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, managing three shots - one on target - and one key pass.

His marauding runs caused problems for the Eredivisie side and he will not hold back if given the opportunity to shine against City, so he is a worthwhile pick to score or assist in this cup tie.

Key stat

Manchester City have won only three of their last seven encounters with Tottenham in all competitions.
