Tottenham vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool were below their best in Sunday's 2-2 Premier League draw at home to Manchester United but they can take out their frustrations on a depleted and demoralised Tottenham by winning the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash.

Normally the onus would be on the home side to push for the victory but, given the lack of options and diminished confidence in the home ranks, there are likely to be modest expectations among Tottenham supporters.

Ange Postecoglou was without ten senior players for Saturday's 2-1 loss at home to Newcastle and his selection for the Liverpool game could be even trickier.

Rodrigo Bentancur is available after suspension but that is more than cancelled out by bans for Pape Sarr and James Maddison, who have each collected two EFL Cup cautions.

Keeping the tie alive should be the aim for Spurs, who may be better equipped to compete in the second leg at Anfield on February 6.

Postecoglou appears to have only one method of playing and his attacking approach could leave his depleted back line horribly exposed.

Spurs completed their first signing of the transfer window on Monday by snapping up highly-rated Czech Under-21 international goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague.

Kinsky could be thrown in at the deep end if Fraser Forster hasn't recovered from the illness which ruled him out of the Newcastle defeat.

Whoever features between the posts it seems highly likely that the home side's chances will rest on scoring a few goals themselves.

Tottenham are the Premier League's second-highest scorers and their attacking approach paid off in the 4-3 EFL Cup quarter-final triumph at home to Manchester United, which was achieved despite some dreadful errors from Forster, who was twice punished for trying to play out from the back.

However, the win over the Red Devils came three days before Liverpool headed to London and secured an astonishing 6-3 Premier League success.

There is every chance of a similarly bonkers game developing and Liverpool are highly likely to emerge victorious.

Liverpool might look back on their weekend draw with United with a few regrets because they started the game slowly and were vulnerable down their defensive right flank with Trent Alexander-Arnold exposed on numerous occasions.

But they will arrive in the capital fully focused and probably a few changes with Arne Slot set to make use of his largely healthy squad.

Slot's starting side might not be anywhere near full-strength but his team should be well-balanced, confident and energetic and more than capable of taking the first-leg spoils.

Liverpool to win
Liverpool won 6-3 away to Spurs last month and should cruise to another comfortable victory.

Both teams to score
Tottenham know only one way to play and can give their fans some cheer by getting on the scoresheet.

Rodrigo Bentancur to be carded
The Uruguayan has picked up five yellow cards in only 12 Premier League appearances and looks a strong candidate for another caution.
