It may have taken 70 years but everyone associated with Newcastle United will feel it was worth it after a resilient Wembley showing saw them overturn match odds of 4-1 to end their domestic trophy drought courtesy of a 2-1 EFL Cup final win over Liverpool.

In the week of his maiden England call-up, local hero Dan Burn powered home a header on the stroke of half-time to open the scoring from Kieran Trippier's corner before Alexander Isak swept in his team’s second after 52 minutes.

The Reds looked to respond, throwing on their attacking reinforcements but were met by stern resistance.

They eventually halved the arrears in second half stoppage time thanks to Federico Chiesa's astute finish but the Magpies held on for history.

Eddie Howe's men will now return from the international break aiming to improve on their current sixth place in the Premier League standings and are 2-1 with bet365 for a top four finish.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's Wembley woe was compounded by Arsenal cutting their lead at the top of the table to 12 points as Mikel Merino scored the only goal to secure a 1-0 win over Chelsea.

In the other 1.30pm kick-off, Fulham boosted their European hopes with a 2-0 victory at home to Tottenham courtesy of second-half strikes from substitutes Rodrigo Muniz and Ryan Sessegnon.

bet365 had Fulham at 25-1 to finish in the top six on Sunday morning but Marco Silva's men were cut to 18-1 following their victory against lacklustre Spurs.
