Liverpool vs West Ham predictions

Last season’s EFL Cup winners Liverpool swatted aside West Ham 5-1 at the quarter-final stage and they can begin their trophy defence with another entertaining victory over the Hammers at Anfield.

The Reds won their opening three Premier League games against Ipswich, Brentford and Manchester United to nil before suffering a rare setback at Anfield in a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

However, Arne Slot’s side have served up the perfect response to that disappointment, which started with getting their Champions League campaign up and running with a 3-1 victory at Milan before Saturday’s routine 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

Slot is sure to ring the changes but such is the strength at the Dutchman’s disposal it is still going to be a talented line-up, with Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and summer signing Federico Chiesa the trio most likely to spearhead his attack.

Some pressure is mounting on West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui after they invested heavily in the summer but have been rewarded with only four points from their first five league games.

Lopetegui went strong with his team selection in their 1-0 victory at home to Bournemouth in the previous round and their poor start to the season means he is unlikely to take too many risks on Merseyside.

But the Hammers have managed only one clean sheet in five league games, conceding three in defeats at home to Manchester City and Chelsea, while they have failed to win on any of their last ten visits to Anfield.

The Londoners have some excellent attacking options, however, and any changes Slot makes to his defence and midfield could lead to a disjointed display.

Both teams have scored in eight of the last ten meetings and West Ham should have the striking quality to grab a consolation goal.

Key stat

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 14 EFL Cup outings.

Liverpool vs West Ham team news

Liverpool
Harvey Elliott is a long-term absentee and number one goalkeeper Alisson is unlikely to be risked after missing Saturday’s win over Bournemouth.

West Ham
Striker Niclas Fullkrug is set to miss out with a calf problem. Guido Rodriguez was sacrificed after just 38 minutes in Saturday's defeat to Chelsea but that was believed to be a tactical tweak.
