Coventry vs Tottenham predictions

A disappointing north London derby defeat to a depleted Arsenal on Sunday means Tottenham have taken just four points from their first four Premier League matches, so Wednesday evening's EFL Cup clash with Coventry should be a welcome distraction for the slow-starting Lilywhites.

Ange Postecoglou was bullish in his post-match interview following that loss, saying "I always win things in my second year", suggesting his side will not be pulling any punches at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues will not be fearing this visit from Spurs given they beat Wolves 3-2 in the FA Cup last term before being seconds away from knocking out Manchester United in the semis, but Mark Robins' side have also endured a difficult start to the season and may not have enough to keep a motivated Tottenham at bay.

Coventry have taken just five points from their first 15 available and their record now stands at three wins in their last 14 matches.

That is good news for Spurs, as is the fact that they have won seven of their last nine EFL Cup matches against lower-league opposition, and they could dominate proceedings.

Postecoglou's bold quote hints that he will be taking this competition seriously and may name a strong side.

Djed Spence has been out of favour for a while and is seemingly not in the Australian's plans, meaning Pedro Porro should keep his place at right-back.

The Spaniard has looked lively going forward this term, taking eight shots and scoring once in four games, and he is a huge price to find the net in this clash.

Porro's four goals last term came against Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and Burnley (2), so he clearly thrives against lesser sides – his strike this season came against promoted Leicester – and he could get plenty of chances against Championship Coventry.

Key stat

Tottenham have won seven of their last nine EFL Cup matches against lower-league sides.
