Declan Rice's England switch could solve a pressing issue for the Three Lions
Gareth Southgate has a valuable new option in midfield
West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has put an end to speculation about his international football future after declaring he will play for England rather than Ireland.
Rice announced he would take time to make the decision in August, when Paddy Power offered 8-11 that he would switch to England and evens that he would stick with Ireland.
The firm stopped taking bets on the 20-year-old choosing England after a gamble in October and he confirmed on Wednesday that, despite playing in three friendlies for Ireland, he will be throwing his name into the mix for a place in Gareth Southgate's side.
In a statement on Twitter, Rice wrote: "Ultimately, it is a personal decision that I have made with my heart and my head, based on what I believe is best for my future.
"My pride at wearing the Irish shirt was always 100 per cent genuine. It was a great honour for myself and my family, and something I will always cherish."
The youngster has made a bold but potentially prosperous call, having impressed at the heart of the Hammers' midfield in the Premier League.
It is testament to his ability that despite the addition of Jack Wilshere in the summer and the consistency of Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang, he has kept his place in the midfield pivot role, making 27 appearances for Manuel Pellegrini.
The emergence of Jadon Sancho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reiss Nelson suggests the future is bright for England but the defensive midfield role is an area they have struggled to plug.
Jordan Henderson was solid during the World Cup but often looked like he lacked a partner and the inconsistent performances of Eric Dier could bolster Rice's chances of slotting straight into the team.
He is composed on the ball, has excellent stamina and has risen to the occasion in big matches this term, not least in the 1-0 win over Arsenal when he scored the decisive goal.
Time will tell but this could be an excellent move for Rice and his new national side.
