New Year's Day EFL preview

Millwall were 17th in the Sky Bet Championship when they appointed Gary Rowett in mid-October but they finished 2019 in 11th place - two points outside the playoffs – and can climb higher by defeating second-bottom Luton at the Den.

Since Rowett's arrival Millwall have lost just two of 13 matches and produced one of their best performances of the season to seal a 1-0 victory at home to Brentford at the weekend.

While the Lions eye up a promotion push, Luton are in deep trouble after losing ten of 13 matches.

Graeme Jones's side have lost 11 of 13 away games – the highest in the division – and were swept aside 3-0 at Bristol City on Saturday.

They have the worst defensive record in the division having conceded 53 goals, while Millwall have scored in 18 consecutive matches.

Fourth-placed Brentford failed to cope with Millwall on Saturday and may suffer another away defeat against Bristol City, who are two points below them.

The Bees receive a lot of praise for the quality of their football but have had a lot of off days on their travels, losing seven of 13 away league games.

The Londoners have taken just one point from their last four road trips and that should encourage Bristol City, who should be buoyed by their win over Luton.

Sky Bet League One promotion-chasers Coventry waited ten games for their first away league win of the season – a 4-1 success at leaders Wycombe – and can follow it up with a victory at Tranmere.

The Sky Blues are playing as well as at any stage of the season and that looks bad news for fourth-bottom Tranmere, who have won one of seven league games.

Injury-hit Rochdale have lost eight of nine League One fixtures and could be heading for another reverse at improving Accrington, who are unbeaten in seven.
