Uruguay have won six of their last seven Copa America quarter-finals and look worthy odds-on favourites to defeat Peru in Salvador.

La Celeste were favourites to win Group C and prevailed with two wins and a draw, including a 1-0 victory over holders Chile on Monday.

Star strikers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez have played key roles – scoring two goals each – but there are not many weaknesses in Oscar Tabarez's well-drilled side which is built on the rock-solid foundation of Atletico Madrid centre-back pairing Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez.

Uruguay may not be a team for the future with Cavani, Suarez, Godin all the wrong side of 30 but they look serious contenders for the trophy.

Peru can be satisfied to have made it through to the last eight for the eighth successive time but they have serious questions to answer after capitulating to a 5-0 loss to Brazil in Sao Paulo last Saturday.

Ricardo Gareca's side love to attack and registered eight shots against the Samba Stars – more than Bolivia (5), Venezuela (6) and Paraguay (5).

But they tend to leave themselves too open at the back and their deficiencies are likely to be punished by arguably the best front two in the competition.

Uruguay's record of 15 Copa America wins is unrivalled but their recent exploits should be of greater concern to Peru.

Tabarez's team have lost just one of their last 12 competitive games – a 2-0 reverse to France in the 2018 World Cup quarter-finals – and look as if they are going to be tough to stop this summer.
