Club Brugge vs Aston Villa predictions
Unai Emery turned 53 on Sunday and it is hard to imagine he had a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham on his birthday wish list.
His unwelcome gift came courtesy of a second-half collapse as his side threw away a one-goal half-time lead to be routed by Spurs and receive a second defeat in a matter of days, having been bounced out of the League Cup by Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
Emery will now be looking for a reaction from his side and it seems likely he will get one in a competition Villa have settled into seamlessly.
The Spanish manager has long been touted as a master of European football, winning a combined four Europa Leagues in his time with Sevilla and Villarreal, but even his biggest fans wouldn't have envisaged the start the Villans have made to their first Champions League campaign.
Villa have won their opening three games against Young Boys, German giants Bayern Munich and Bologna without conceding a goal and were sitting top of the table prior to this week's round of fixtures.
There is every chance they will remain at the summit following this round too given that Club Brugge have struggled through the early part of this Champions League season.
The Belgian outfit were thrashed 3-0 at home by Borussia Dortmund in their opener while their last European clash saw them beaten 3-1 by an inconsistent Milan at San Siro.
Their sole win came against Sturm Graz, who were one of six teams to start this round with zero points, and a visit from a Villa side with a point to prove after their humbling in north London could spell trouble for Nicky Hayen's men.
The Villans' success last term was built largely on their exceptional record at Villa Park, but it is on the road where they have impressed most this time.
Before their defeat at Tottenham Villa had won four of the five matches in an unbeaten away run to start the season, suggesting a short trip across the channel should prove to be no problem.
Brugge have also won only four of their eight home games this term, so playing on their own patch is unlikely to give them enough of a boost to see of their superior visitors.
Emery has balanced his squad well this season and will probably bring in Jhon Duran, Ian Maatsen and Leon Bailey for this clash, all of whom will be fit and ready to prove they should be starting more regularly.
The hosts do not have the luxury of a deep squad and their weary legs are set to show against Villa, who can grant their boss a belated birthday gift with a fourth consecutive Champions League win.
Key stat
Aston Villa have won all three of their Champions League games without conceding.

Morgan Rogers over 0.5 shots
