Chelsea vs Real Madrid predictions

Despite winning the last five Women's Super League titles, Chelsea have yet to taste success in the Champions League and their campaign to put that right starts against Real Madrid.

The Blues are now under the stewardship of Sonia Bompastor, who won the European crown during her time at Lyon, and the postponement of their league game against Manchester United on Sunday has given them a break before taking on Las Blancas.

Their opponents, who gained a place in the group stage by seeing off Sporting Lisbon in a qualifier, have won their opening five games in La Liga Femenina but Athletic Bilbao are the only team they have seen off who finished in the top half last season, so tougher tests await, including this one.

The Spaniards have lost five of their last six group matches in this competition and could find it difficult to break down a team who have kept eight clean sheets in their last ten games, including league outings against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

Chelsea have suffered just three defeats - two against Barcelona and one against Lyon - in their last 20 Champions League matches, but their recent meetings with Real Madrid have been close.

They have drawn on both their visits to Madrid in the last two seasons and claimed 2-1 and 2-0 home victories, so they may not run away with things. Backing a home win with fewer than four goals, something which has happened all but two of Chelsea's last 12 home games in this competition, looks the best bet.
