Chelsea vs Newcastle predictions

Both Chelsea and Newcastle entered this season following contrasting summers in terms of player turnover but with the same mutual goal – to finish in the top four.

While both have made a solid enough start to the campaign, a look into the form suggests that one side is likelier than the other to take a big step towards achieving that goal when the two clash at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea held their own against league-leaders Liverpool last weekend, narrowly losing 2-1 at Anfield, and bounced back in fashion – albeit with a heavily rotated side – in Athens, beating Panathinaikos 4-1 in the Conference League.

That victory means the Blues have won six of their last eight matches in a run which includes just one defeat and comfortable victories over Brighton and West Ham.

Chelsea's only defeats in their last 22 league games have come against last season's top three, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, and the Blues have won 13 of their other 19 matches in that run.

That, alongside a miserable record at Stamford Bridge which has seen them win just once in 29 Premier League visits, is bad news for Newcastle, who have struggled for form of late.

The Magpies' only win in five matches came against League Two Wimbledon in the League Cup while their were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton in their last away game.

Eddie Howe needs to find a win from somewhere but Newcastle's record at Stamford Bridge – they have lost 21 times in their 29 Premier League visits – suggests it is unlikely to come from this clash, especially with key men Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson still out injured.

Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon are a dangerous pair, though, and the Magpies could have enough to find the net in west London, just as they have done in their last four meetings with the Blues.

Despite looking impressive going forwards under  new boss Enzo Maresca, Chelsea clearly still have work to do in defence as the both teams have score in each of their last five games and five of their last seven in the Premier League.

However, in contrast to his opposite number Howe, Maresca has a full squad to choose from for the first time in his Chelsea career now Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana have returned from suspension.

With Reece James back, Cole Palmer in flying form and Nicolas Jackson a constant threat, a full-strength Chelsea are likely to prove too strong for Newcastle, whose miserable record at Stamford Bridge looks set to continue, even if they do manage to find the net.

Key stat

Chelsea vs Newcastle bet builder predictions

Chelsea to win
The Blues' only home loss in 16 games came against Manchester City and they should have too much for Newcastle, who could only manage a draw at Everton in their last away match.

Moises Caicedo to be shown a card
The Ecuadorian has somehow picked up only two Premier League yellow cards this term, despite committing 15 fouls, but he may find himself in the book this time as he must keep tabs on Bruno Guimaraes, the division's most fouled player.

Dan Burn to be shown a card
The Newcastle defender has already picked up four Premier League yellows this season and may collect a fifth as he lacks the pace to cope with Nicolas Jackson.
