Young Boys vs Aston Villa predictions

Aston Villa have risen from the Championship to the Champions League over the last six years but they have had a few setbacks along the way and may fall short against Swiss champions Young Boys in their opening match.

Champions League football is a new experience for the Villans, who last played top-level European football in 1982-83 when they reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup.

But it will be a familiar exercise to Villa manager Unai Emery, who has taken charge of five clubs - Valencia, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, Paris St-Germain and Villarreal - in Europe's premier competition.

Emery has won three Europa League titles  with Sevilla and one with Villarreal, and reached the Champions League semi-finals with Villarreal in 2021-22.

The 52-year-old's attention to detail is superb and his preparations have included an early flight out to Switzerland to ensure maximum time for his players to train on the artificial playing surface. However, it will be difficult for Emery to get his players truly comfortable with the conditions.

Young Boys played in the Champions League group stage last season and lost two of their three home games including a 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City. But they have had some big results in Champions League home fixtures, including a 2-1 success over Juventus in December 2018 and a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in September 2021.

The Swiss side started their domestic season with three straight defeats and sit bottom of the table on three points from six games. Nonetheless they raised their game in the Champions League playoff against Galatasaray, winning 3-2 at home and 1-0 in Istanbul.

Based on their performances against Gala, they should provide stiff opposition to Villa and are well worth backing to take at least a share of the spoils.
