Wednesday's Champions League predictions

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

The new format of the Champions League means supporters are treated to heavyweight showdowns earlier in the competition and it doesn’t get much bigger than Barcelona against Bayern Munich.

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick would love to get one over his former employers and this is an excellent opportunity to do so as the Catalan giants go into it fresh from a 5-1 success over Sevilla on Sunday.

Bayern have dropped points in two of their last three Bundesliga outings, against Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt, while they were beaten 1-0 away at Aston Villa on matchday two.

Having also lost at Lazio and Real Madrid and been held to a 2-2 draw at Arsenal in last season’s Champions League, Bayern are winless in four European away outings and in Barca they face a team who have won all five home fixtures this season, racking up 20 goals.

Benfica vs Feyenoord

Bruno Lage has made an instant impact at Benfica, guiding them to six straight successes, and his perfect record can continue against Feyenoord, who are only fourth in the Eredivisie.

Benfica's run includes victories in their opening Champions League assignments with Red Star Belgrade and Atletico Madrid, whom they brushed aside 4-0 at home, while the Dutch visitors have lost five of their last seven matches in this competition.

Young Boys vs Inter

Young Boys have been outclassed 3-0 by Aston Villa and humbled 5-0 by Barcelona in this season’s Champions League and another harsh lesson may await at home to Inter.

The Serie A champions built on their goalless draw at Manchester City with a 4-0 rout of Red Star Belgrade and another clean sheet can follow against the Swiss side, who have lost four of their last six matches without scoring.

Brest vs Bayer Leverkusen

Both Brest and Leverkusen are two from two in this season’s Champions League, but the Bundesliga side may have achieved more in their victories over Feyenoord and Milan.

Brest are only 11th in Ligue 1 after eight matches and this will be considerably tougher than when they recorded wins over Sturm Graz and Salzburg.

Atletico Madrid vs Lille

Lille stunned Real Madrid on matchday two, winning 1-0 at home, but Atletico Madrid are odds-on to bring them back down to earth in the Spanish capital.

Atletico remain formidable at the Metropolitano, where they have won five Champions League matches in a row including a 2-1 victory over Leipzig in this season’s opener.

Salzburg vs Dinamo Zagreb

Salzburg have lost both of their Champions League games by an aggregate of 7-0 while Dinamo Zagreb were beaten 9-2 at Bayern in their opening away match, suggesting two fragile defences will be on show.
