Sporting vs Arsenal predictions

Arsenal’s opening four Champions League matches have been starved of goalmouth entertainment, but Tuesday's trip to Portuguese leaders Sporting could be the moment their European campaign sparks into life.

The Gunners' quartet of European outings have yielded just four goals in total and their two away games have seen them frustrated in a goalless draw at Atalanta and beaten 1-0 at Inter.

Having also suffered a 1-0 loss in last season's competition at Porto, who trail Sporting by six points at the top of the Primeira Liga, Mikel Arteta will be only too aware of the challenge his side face in Lisbon, especially as Arsenal have won only one of their last eight Champions League away games.

Ruben Amorim’s switch to Manchester United didn’t deter Sporting on Friday as they ran out emphatic 6-0 winners against Amarante in the Portuguese Cup in their opening game under Amorim's successor Joao Pereira.

That stretched their winning streak in all competitions to nine games and they have taken ten points from their first four Champions League outings, which includes an outstanding 4-1 demolition of Manchester City at the Estadio Jose Alvalade last time out.

The hiding dished out to the Premier League champions should ensure Arteta has his troops fully focused on the task at hand and Arsenal enjoyed the perfect preparation on Saturday when they swatted aside Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the Emirates.

Creative sparks Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka both looked in stellar form at the weekend and, with injuries now starting to clear, the Gunners are expected to ask serious questions of Sporting's rearguard.

But Arsenal’s backline will also face a serious test, not least from Sporting's prolific Swede Viktor Gyokeres, who has racked up 24 goals in 17 club appearances this season and failing to score on only three occasions.

The former Coventry star scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 crushing of City and he will be confident of causing more damage against Arsenal, who have been breached in nine of their last 13 matches.

So there is the potential for this to turn into a shootout, especially when you consider that Sporting’s last six victories have been by 3-0, 3-1, 5-1, 4-1, 4-2 and 6-0 scorelines.

Sporting’s favoured 3-4-3 formation usually allows for plenty of chances for both sides and another cracker could be in store in the Portuguese capital.

Key stat

Seven of Sporting’s last eight matches have produced at least three goals.
