Match preview
Punters figuring out Pep Guardiola's plans for Manchester City's dead rubber in Leipzig might want to look back 12 months for guidance.
A 0-0 draw in Porto on matchday five this time last year had banked top spot in Group C for the Premier League giants and gave them a free hit against Marseille on matchday six. In front of no fans, a reshuffled City thumped the Frenchmen 3-0.
City have once again nailed top spot and again will bow out of the group phase in front of no fans, this time in Leipzig where a strong-enough side can take care of their troubled hosts.
Leipzig look to be there for the taking. In the grip of a Covid crisis, 14th in the Bundesliga after three straight defeats and now managerless following Jesse Marsch's exit, confidence in the camp appears to have been drained.
Marsch's assistant Achim Beierlozer, himself just out of quarantine, has been handed the reins for this task which does carry significance for Leipzig, who need to match Brugge's result - they play Paris Saint-Germain - to ensure a Europa League berth.
Leipzig have looked decent at times this term – they beat Dortmund and drew with PSG – but they are a pale shadow of the Julian Nagelsmann side which was gutted in the summer.
Crushed 6-3 in Manchester back in September, Leipzig will be taking on a different-looking City team. But being able to draft in Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fernandinho and one or two others, merely shows the strength in depth at City who can sign off with a win.
Key stat
No two sides have been involved in games with more goals than Leipzig (26) and City (25) in this season's group stage
