Manchester City vs Inter predictions

Manchester City have won their opening game in the last five Champions League campaigns and they can pass a stern test at home to Inter.

The revamped Champions League format is intended among other things to deliver higher revenue for participating clubs by increasing the number of high-profile matches.

City's league phase includes eye-catching trips to Juventus and Paris St-Germain and they commence with a heavyweight clash against Inter in a repeat of the 2023 final.

Pep Guardiola's side went into that occasion as warm favourites but they were dragged into a tough game and were hugely relieved to grind out a 1-0 success, courtesy of Rodri's 68th minute goal.

Inter were bitterly disappointed on the night after creating good chances and winning the shot count 14 to seven, but they took a lot of confidence from the performance and have used it as a springboard to make further progress.

Simeone Inzaghi's side were Serie A champions last season, losing only two of 38 matches and finishing 19 points clear of second-placed Milan.

In the Champions League they went through the group phase undefeated before losing a penalty shootout to Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.

Failing to advance past Atletico was disappointing but Inter have bolstered their squad with several new additions, including midfield pair Piotr Zielinski and Davide Frattesi and Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi.

The Italian side look well equipped to compete strongly on domestic and European fronts although the Champions League draw has dealt them the toughest possible start.

City fell well below their usual standards in Saturday's 2-1 victory at home to Brentford and were slightly fortunate to maintain their 100 per cent record.

However, they were more settled after the half-time introduction of Rodri and Josko Gvardiol, and should be even stronger against Inter with Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias among the senior players expected to come back into the side.

Guardiola did not get the balance right against Brentford, who were given too many opportunities on the counter-attack.

And he knows his team can ill-afford similar moments of slack play against Inter, who were Serie A's top scorers last term with 89 goals.

City might need to be a little more circumspect with how they press to avoid opening up opportunities for Inter's pacy front two of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.

A more patient approach may be seen from the home side but they should eventually find a way through and ensure a winning Champions League start for the sixth successive occasion.

Manchester City vs Inter bet builder predictions

Manchester City to win
City have won 12 of their last 13 Champions League home games and should have too much quality for Inter, who were below par in a 1-1 weekend draw at Monza.

Kevin De Bruyne to score any time
The Belgian has had 14 shots in four Premier League games and could be the man to break Inter's resistance.

Rodri to be carded
Rodri is likely to lack some match sharpness and that increases his chances of being shown a yellow card.
