Liverpool vs Real Madrid predictions
Liverpool are the only team to have won their first four matches in the new-look Champions League and Arne Slot's rampant Reds are odds-on to extend that streak against Real Madrid at Anfield.
Slot's men face two of the toughest challenges in world football this week, taking on Real in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League.
But Liverpool look well equipped to gain positive results in each game at Anfield and, even if they do slip up, their sensational early-season form means they would still be in strong positions in both competitions.
The Reds have an eight-point lead over champions City in the Premier League title race after 12 rounds of fixtures.
And their impressive Champions League victories over Milan, Bologna, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen should allow Slot to rest key players over the second half of the campaign in which they play Real, Girona, Lille and PSV Eindhoven.
While Liverpool look nailed on for a top-eight finish and a bye to the last 16, holders Real kick off matchday five in 18th place in the table.
They have suffered surprise defeats to Lille and Milan and trailed Borussia Dortmund 2-0 on matchday three before roaring back to win 5-2.
Vinicius Junior, who scored a hat-trick in the comeback against BVB, was injured in Sunday's La Liga win over Leganes and Carlo Ancelotti will be forced to field a patched-up defence at Anfield. Dani Carvajal, David Alaba and Eder Militao are injured and Federico Valverde played as an emergency right-back in Sunday's game.
Leganes were unable to muster a shot on target but Liverpool's forwards are a more formidable proposition, having thrashed German champions Leverkusen 4-0 in their last European fixture at Anfield.
The Reds were not at their best against bottom club Southampton on Sunday but Mohamed Salah's late penalty earned them a 3-2 victory at St Mary's.
While Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, two stars of Real's Champions League triumph last season, are missing, Liverpool's defenders can expect a tough night against Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
Given the Reds' lofty position in the Champions League standings, Slot is bound to have Sunday's showdown with City on his mind so Liverpool look short enough in the match betting.
Over 3.5 goals has been a winning bet in four of Real's last five games – the exception was the 3-0 win at Leganes, where they had nine shots on target – and that is an appealing bet given the visitors' depleted defence.
Key stat
Four of Real Madrid's last five matches have featured over 3.5 goals
Liverpool vs Real Madrid team news
Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott will be on the bench but Federico Chiesa will not be risked and Kostas Tsimikas, Alisson and Diogo Jota are out. Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz should return to the starting 11.
Real Madrid
Vinicius Junior has joined Aurelien Tchouameni, Rodrygo, David Alaba, Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao on the sidelines. Lucas Vazquez has travelled but is a doubt so Federico Valverde could start at right-back.
