Liverpool vs Bayer Leverkusen predictions

Xabi Alonso was a hot favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager earlier this year but he opted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, who look capable of ending the Reds' perfect start to their Champions League campaign.

Former Liverpool midfielder Alonso's decision has worked out well for all parties. He led Leverkusen to their maiden Bundesliga title in 2023-24, also landing the DFB-Pokal, and their only defeat of the season came against Atalanta in the Europa League final.

Despite being lower down Liverpool's managerial wishlist, Arne Slot has made a flying start to his career at Anfield, both in the Premier League and Champions League.

Ten games into the league season, Slot's men are 2-1 to win the title – from 15-2 at the start of term – and they are also favourites to finish top of the new-look Champions League standings.

Wins over Milan, Bologna and RB Leipzig have put Liverpool on course for a top-eight finish and safe passage to the last 16 while they maintained their excellent domestic form with a quickfire double over Brighton last week.

A 3-2 EFL Cup win at the Amex Stadium was followed by a hard-fought 2-1 league victory at Anfield, where the Reds needed a superb strike from Mohamed Salah to take full advantage of defeats for title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.

Salah's 81st-minute goal had salvaged a 2-2 draw against the Gunners in north London and each of Liverpool's last five wins have been by a one-goal margin.

They fell behind early in Milan before rallying to claim a 3-1 victory and Bologna missed several good chances before slipping to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield.

Liverpool looked off the pace in the first half against Brighton on Saturday and their tough run of fixtures continues with this weekend's home game against Aston Villa.

The odd slip-up is inevitable and the draw looks an appealing price when they host Leverkusen, who have shared the points in four of their last five Bundesliga matches.

That sequence includes draws with Stuttgart and Bayern Munich, who finished second and third in the German top flight last term, and Alonso's men have beaten Milan 1-0 and drawn 1-1 away to Brest in their last two Champions League outings.

Like Liverpool, they are well in the hunt for the top eight and, having lost only twice since the start of last season, they look worth backing to snap the Reds' winning streak in Europe.
