Leipzig vs Aston Villa predictions

Unai Emery is renowned for his success in European club competitions and his Aston Villa side have made an impressive start to their Champions League campaign.

The only goal Villa have conceded in their first five matches was a penalty awarded to Club Brugge after Tyrone Mings inexplicably picked up the ball on matchday four.

But despite beating Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna and drawing 0-0 with Juventus, Emery's men still have work to do to secure a top-eight finish and a bye to the round of 16.

On paper, they should be confident about facing an RB Leipzig side who have lost their first five Champions League fixtures but the draw looks the best bet in a clash between two inconsistent teams.

Leipzig suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at Celtic on matchday four but their other four losses, against Atletico Madrid, Juve, leaders Liverpool and Italian champions Inter, were all by a one-goal margin.

Since the 1-0 defeat to Inter at San Siro, where they mustered only one shot on target, Leipzig have eased the pressure on manager Marco Rose with a couple of vital domestic victories.

They beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 in the DFB-Pokal before a 2-0 Bundesliga win at Holstein Kiel last weekend although Rose is hampered by a lengthy list of injury absentees including Dutch playmaker Xavi Simons.

Leipzig produced some threatening moments against Liverpool, racking up six shots on target and having a couple of efforts ruled out for offside.

Forwards Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko have the potential to dent Villa's outstanding defensive record in Europe and Emery must be wary of his side's recent struggles on the road in the Premier League.

They have lost their last three away games in the English top flight, letting slip a 1-0 lead to lose 4-1 at Tottenham before going down 2-0 at Liverpool and 3-0 at Chelsea.

A 3-1 home win over Brentford last week was a welcome boost, ending an eight-game winless run, and they followed up with a drab 1-0 victory over Southampton at Villa Park on Saturday.

That result owed more to the limitations of the Premier League's bottom club than to anything special from Villa and a tight contest is expected in Leipzig.

Neither team are playing with great confidence but a point would not be a bad result for Villa, who finish their league campaign with a trip to Monaco and a home fixture against Celtic.
